Pick a category

Can't get the group to agree? Our guide on how to pick a team name that doesn't suck walks through the naming formulas, the jersey test, and how to settle it in one vote.

What makes a team name survive the season

The names that last are the ones that pass three practical tests. Say it out loud first: team names get shouted in huddles and read over gym speakers, so two to four syllables of punch beats a clever mouthful nobody can chant. Then picture it in print, because long names shrink to an unreadable arc across the back of a jersey and most rec-league scoreboards truncate after about fifteen characters. Finally, check how it ages. A self-deprecating name is still funny at 0-9, while a name that promises dominance sets an expectation the first opponent you meet will happily test.

Choosing a category

The sport or setting decides the vocabulary. Basketball names lean on swishes, screens and buzzer beaters; softball, bowling, kickball and dodgeball each have their own joke language; soccer and volleyball reward names built on set pieces and net play. Trivia names are their own genre entirely, closer to pun-writing than sport, and office names have to clear a bar the others do not, which is that everyone in the room can read it out at a company event without wincing. Fantasy football sits between the two, where the joke is usually about a specific player and therefore has a shelf life of one season.

Settling it without a two-hour argument

Naming a team by committee is where most rosters lose an evening. The fastest method is to shortlist five names, remove any that fail the jersey or scoreboard test, and then vote once with no discussion. A name everyone helped choose gets chanted much louder than one the captain picked alone, but the choosing has to be bounded or it becomes the whole night. The guide to picking a team name has the full checklist, including the naming mistakes worth avoiding.
